AI customer service is no longer a luxury reserved for large brands. Today, there are plenty of AI-powered chat solutions on the market, but most come with monthly subscription fees or usage-based pricing.
That's why Shopify's latest update to Shopify Inbox caught my attention.
Shopify has introduced its own AI Agent, allowing merchants to provide automated customer support directly through Shopify Inbox—without paying for a third-party AI chatbot.
I recently tested the feature, and in this article I'll share:
What Shopify Inbox AI Agent can do
How to set it up in just a few minutes
How to configure the Knowledge Base for better answers
Its strengths and current limitations
Whether it's the right choice for your store
If you're looking for a simple way to add AI-powered customer support to your Shopify store, this is a great place to start.
What Is Shopify Inbox AI Agent?
Shopify Inbox AI Agent is Shopify's built-in AI assistant for live chat.
Once enabled, it can automatically respond to common customer questions through your Shopify Inbox chat widget.
Typical questions include:
Product information
Shipping policies
Return and refund policies
Order-related questions
Frequently asked questions
Instead of replacing your customer support team, it acts more like an AI assistant that handles repetitive inquiries so your team can focus on more complex conversations.
My First Impressions After Testing
The setup process was surprisingly simple.
Unlike many AI chatbot platforms, there are no complicated prompts to write, APIs to connect, or workflows to build.
Within a few minutes, the AI Agent was already responding to customer questions.
I tested several common scenarios.
"Where is my order?"
If the customer is authenticated and Shopify can access the order information, the AI can provide order-related responses.
"Do you ship internationally?"
If your shipping policy exists in the Knowledge Base, the AI can answer accurately.
Without that information, it doesn't simply invent an answer—it either provides limited information or asks the customer to contact support.
"Tell me about this product."
The AI reads information directly from your Shopify product data, including:
Product title
Product description
Images
Price
Inventory availability
The better your product descriptions are, the better the AI performs.
After testing, my biggest takeaway was this:
Shopify Inbox AI Agent is designed to answer questions, not to actively sell products.
It handles FAQs very well, but it isn't intended to replace more advanced AI sales assistants that offer personalized recommendations or sophisticated sales conversations.
For many Shopify stores, however, that's exactly what's needed.
How to Set Up Shopify Inbox AI Agent
The entire setup process takes only a few minutes.
Step 1: Install Shopify Inbox
Install the Shopify Inbox app from the Shopify App Store.
Complete the standard Inbox setup by:
Enabling the chat widget
Configuring your support information
Making sure the chat widget appears on your storefront
Once your live chat is working, you're ready to enable AI.
Step 2: Turn On AI Agent
Go to:
Shopify Inbox → Agent
Simply switch on the AI Agent.
That's it.
There are no complicated onboarding steps or AI model configurations required.
Step 3: Choose When AI Should Reply
You can choose when the AI Agent is allowed to respond.
24/7 Support
The AI answers customer questions at all times.
Ideal for:
Small teams
Solo merchants
International businesses serving multiple time zones
Only When Human Agents Are Offline
If you already have a support team, you can let your staff handle conversations during business hours while the AI takes over after hours.
This is the mode I'd recommend for most growing businesses.
Step 4: Customize Your AI Agent
Inside the Agent settings, you can customize the AI's personality.
For example, you can adjust its tone to be:
More professional
More friendly
Better aligned with your brand voice
While the customization options aren't as extensive as some enterprise AI platforms, they're more than sufficient for most Shopify stores.
Where Does the AI Get Its Information?
One concern many merchants have is:
Will the AI make things up?
Fortunately, Shopify clearly defines where the AI is allowed to retrieve information.
Currently, it uses three primary sources.
1. Your Products
The AI reads your Shopify product information, including:
Titles
Descriptions
Images
Pricing
Inventory status
This means well-written product pages don't just improve SEO—they also improve your AI customer service.
2. Shopify Knowledge Base
This is probably the most overlooked part of the setup—and arguably the most important.
Knowledge Base is a separate Shopify app, so you'll need to install it as well.
Once installed, you can create articles covering topics such as:
Shipping policies
Return and refund policies
Warranty information
Payment methods
Brand information
Frequently Asked Questions
How Should You Structure Your Knowledge Base?
Rather than copying long policy pages, create content in a question-and-answer format.
For example:
Do you ship internationally?
Yes. We currently ship to the United States, Canada, Australia, and most European countries.
How long does shipping take?
Standard shipping typically takes 3–7 business days.
Can I return my order?
Yes. Returns are accepted within 30 days of delivery, provided the items are unused and in their original packaging.
This structure is much easier for the AI to understand and allows it to provide more natural and accurate responses.
Whenever your shipping policies, return rules, or business information change, remember to update your Knowledge Base as well.
3. Customer and Order Information
The AI can also access customer-specific Shopify data, including:
Customer information
Order information
This enables it to answer certain order-related questions rather than only product inquiries.
Practice Before Going Live
Before making the AI available to customers, I strongly recommend using Practice Scenarios.
This feature lets you simulate conversations and test how the AI responds.
For example, try asking:
Where is my order?
How much is shipping?
Can I return this item?
Do you ship internationally?
Is this product waterproof?
If the responses aren't ideal, you can improve them by:
Updating product descriptions
Expanding your Knowledge Base
Adjusting the AI personality
A few rounds of testing can significantly improve the customer experience before launch.
Don't Forget Your Privacy Policy
There's one important requirement that's easy to overlook.
When enabling AI Agent, Shopify displays the following reminder:
Ensure your privacy policy covers Shopify's role in processing customer data.
Before going live, review your Privacy Policy and make sure it explains how Shopify processes customer data to support AI-powered customer service.
Who Should Use Shopify Inbox AI Agent?
Based on my testing, this feature is particularly well suited for:
If your support requirements become more sophisticated over time, you can always upgrade to a dedicated AI customer service platform later.
Pros and Current Limitations
What I Like
Completely free
Built by Shopify
Extremely easy to configure
No APIs or prompt engineering required
Uses your existing Shopify product and order data
Great starting point for merchants new to AI customer support
Current Limitations
Better at answering questions than driving sales
Response quality depends heavily on your product content and Knowledge Base
Less customizable than dedicated AI customer support platforms
Advanced workflows and automation are still relatively limited
Final Thoughts
If you're just getting started with Shopify, I think Shopify Inbox AI Agent is well worth enabling.
My recommendation is simple:
Install Shopify Inbox.
Install and configure Shopify Knowledge Base.
Organize your shipping, returns, payment, and FAQ content into clear question-and-answer articles.
Enable AI Agent.
Test it thoroughly using Practice Scenarios.
Review your Privacy Policy before going live.
In less than half an hour, you can have a free AI assistant handling many of your customers' most common questions around the clock.
Is it the most powerful AI customer support platform available today? No.
Is it one of the easiest and most cost-effective ways for Shopify merchants to start using AI? Absolutely.
For new Shopify stores and growing businesses, it's an excellent first step into AI-powered customer service. As your business scales and your support needs become more sophisticated, you can always evaluate whether it's time to invest in a more advanced AI solution.
